Readers Digest helping me with diabetes education and recipes

june 13 2008

This week is a complete crime to keep my glucose levels under control.
The stress, the changed times for dinner, because the girls walk the evening marches.
It's simply not good for my diabetes.

The father of the children offered to cook tonight and tomorrow.
When I asked him what he wanted to make, he said: "pancakes", which means: fat, sugary syrup, preceded by unhealthy soup from a tin and followed by a dessert which contains enough calories to make a dead elephant walk.

Like always he said he wanted to cook just one meal, so I should take something myself or ignore the diabetes for a few days.

So it was time for some diabetes education.

It has always been a fight to make him understand what diabetes is and how it influences my daily life. Untill now he didn't belief other people should be treating their bodies with as much care and respect, because diabetes food is healthy food, and is good for everyone.

Knowing that he loves Readers Digest I had my best weapon online: Readers Digest online. To be precise: RD.com - Managing Diabetes.

It has the best information Readers Digest has to offer, with topics like Understanding Glycemic Index, Exercising with Diabetes, Foods to Stabilize Blood Sugar and ofcourse Diabetes-Friendly Recipes.
Al written and presented in the pleasant and relaxed way we know so well from the Readers Digest booklets.

Turned out he didn't only read a lot of the information, he also informed people at his work about the site. Great!

We all sat down and made dinnerplans for the next two evenings.
Including fresh vegetable soup, made by the girls, multi-grain pancakes, and maple-walnut roasted apples.

They had so much pleasure readiung the site that they even agreed to make Oatmeal-Peanut Butter Trail Bars to take to school, which is ofcourse much healthier than the bought sweet bars children want.

I'm sure the site will be used often to find recipes so I wrote the url of RD.com - Diabetes Friendly Foods on our kitchen whiteboard.

The site is frequently updated with the latest news about diabetes and it contains hundreds of recipes. So don'ty forget to bookmark it.

I'm so glad to have found this site to help me to motivate not only myself, but also others to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.
